Guide 05

Building Safe Driving Habits

Safe driving is mostly habit. A short self assessment helps you see which habits are strong and which need work.

Quick safe driving self assessment

Answer honestly. Each no is a habit worth practicing this week.

  • Do I keep at least three seconds of following distance?
  • Is my phone out of reach while the car is moving?
  • Do I signal every lane change and turn?
  • Do I check blind spots with a shoulder glance?
  • Do I slow down before curves rather than in them?

Speed awareness

Arriving a few minutes sooner rarely justifies the added stopping distance that higher speed brings. Leave earlier rather than driving faster.

Practice one habit at a time

Choose a single habit for a week, such as full stops at stop signs. Once it becomes automatic, move to the next.
