Adverse Weather and Night Driving

Rain, snow, fog, and darkness reduce traction and visibility. Slowing down and increasing space are the two most effective adjustments.

Rain and hydroplaning

The first minutes of rain are often the slickest as oil rises to the surface. Reduce speed, double your following distance, and avoid sudden steering. If you hydroplane, ease off the accelerator and steer straight.

Snow and ice

Accelerate and brake gently. Bridges and overpasses freeze first. Clear all snow from windows, lights, and the roof before driving.

Fog

Use low beam headlights, since high beams reflect back and reduce visibility. Follow the right edge line and slow down well before visibility drops.

Nighttime driving precautions

Keep headlights and windshield clean, dim dashboard lights, and look toward the right edge of the road when facing oncoming glare. Plan rest stops on long trips to manage fatigue.
