Look far ahead and scan often
Aim your eyes well down the road rather than at the vehicle directly in front of you. Check mirrors every five to eight seconds so you always know what surrounds your car.
- Scan intersections left, right, then left again before entering.
- Watch brake lights two or three vehicles ahead.
- Notice pedestrians, cyclists, and parked cars that could move.
Manage the space around your vehicle
A buffer on all sides gives you room to brake, steer, or stop. Avoid lingering beside large trucks and do not let others box you in.
Match speed to conditions
The posted limit is the maximum for ideal conditions. Traffic density, visibility, curves, and road surface can all call for a lower speed.
Always have an escape route
Ask yourself where you would go if the car ahead stopped suddenly. A shoulder, an open lane, or extra following distance can turn a near miss into a non event.
